1st & 2nd Thursdays in May & June • 6 pm
Returning to: Prescott Pride Center, 111 Josephine Street, Prescott
The Pride Center’s Spanish class tried out a different time slot last month, but it didn’t work out as well as we had hoped. For the next two months, we’re moving class to the first and second Thursdays of the month and we’re back at the Pride Center. Hopefully, this new schedule will work out well for our regulars and maybe even for some new students. If the new time works for you and you’d like to attend, please contact Robert at (928) 776-8526 or (928) 830-4683. You can start Spanish classes any time and attend as many or as few classes as you’d like. All skill levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced. A $3 suggested donation (more if you can, less if you can’t) per student is requested for each lesson.
Sundays, May 4th & 18th / June 1st & 22nd • 5 pm (note later time)
Pioneer Park Ballfield, 1200 Commerce Drive, Prescott
(see list of back-up fields below)
The Pride Center will continue to host informal softball practice and/or scrimmage games (depending on how many people show up) two Sundays a month throughout the summer. Starting in May, we’re moving our start time to 5 pm to keep us out of the intense afternoon heat. As we mentioned last month, Softball Sundays are just for fun (no league commitment) and are open to people of all ages, gender, and skill levels, including first-time players. Cheerleaders and spectators are also welcome.
We’ll meet at the Pioneer Park Ballfield concession window and choose an open field from there. If there aren’t any diamonds available at Pioneer Park, we will move on to the following fields in consecutive order: Kuebler, Heritage Park, and Willow Creek Park. If you need directions to any of the ballfields or have any questions about Softball Sundays, please contact Tracy on her cell phone at (928) 830-7035.
Once again, here’s the fine print for players: Softball, while generally beneficial for one’s health, may result in physical injury. Therefore, please note that participation in Softball Sundays is at your own risk. We encourage you to get clearance from your health care provider before entering into any type of exercise regimen and we recommend that you warm up and stretch adequately before any physical exertion. The bottom line is that we want you to have fun, but we also want you to be safe while doing it. We also need you to know that the Prescott Pride Center won’t be financially responsible for any accidents or injuries that occur on Softball Sundays. Your attendance at these events indicates your acceptance of these terms and conditions.
Fridays, May 9th / June 13th • 6 pm
Loni & Gina’s Place (call for directions)
Girls just wanna have fun, right? We also have that “Joan of Arc is in our DNA” fascination with fire, too, don’t we? So the combination of fun and flames was simply inevitable, wasn’t it? So here’s our plan… on the second Friday of every month, we’re going to have Girlz Grillin’ Night at Loni and Gina’s house. They’ll provide the main dish for grilling and everyone else just needs to bring an appetizer, side dish, or dessert. Loni and Gina will have water and some sodas, but it’s BYOB (non-alcoholic) for any other beverages you might like.
RSVPs are an absolute must for this event. We can’t very well expect Loni and Gina to buy 47 steaks or 83 hotdogs on the off chance you might stop by, now can we? So please RSVP to Loni at (928) 499-0346 or Gina at (928) 499-8517 by Tuesday, May 6th for the May event or Tuesday, June 10th for June. There is no charge for Grillin’ Night, but donations will be accepted for the Pride Center to support our work in the community. Directions and any other details will be provided when you RSVP.
Sunday, May 18th • 1:30 pm
Prescott Pride Center, 111 Josephine Street, Prescott
Did you ever notice that everybody dies, but nobody wants to talk about what will happen when they do? It’s a fact of life that no one wants to discuss, but we all know that we really should, especially since members of the GLBT community may need more legal protections in these situations. That’s why the Pride Center will be offering a series of estate planning events geared specifically for the GLBT community. We want you to be informed so you can take steps to protect your chosen family and your personal assets.
The first part of our series focuses on funeral planning. Robert Gortarez, who has worked in the funeral industry for 17 years, will give a comprehensive presentation on funeral planning, followed by a substantial question and answer period. This is your chance to get accurate information about funeral services and to ask any question you’ve ever had about burials, cremations, pre-paid funerals, embalming, funeral insurance, and more. The presentation is designed to educate you as a consumer and to provide you with the information you need to plan for your individual end-of-life needs. And rest assured, there will be nothing for sale and no pressure to make any type of pre-paid funeral arrangements. Robert is retired from the funeral business and is only interested in providing information and resources.
If you think you’re too young to attend an event like this, you may be dead wrong (pun intended). People of all ages die, and no one knows if they’ll live to be 30, 50, or 100. That’s why it’s in everyone’s best interest to attend this event and get educated on end-of-life decision-making. As with all our educational events, it’s free, but the Pride Center welcomes any donations to help defray operating costs.
Due to limited space, we ask that you RSVP to Robert at (928) 776-8526 or (928) 830-4683 by Friday, May 16th. You may also contact him in advance if you have any questions about the presentation.
Every Other Thursday in May & June • 6 to 7 pm
Backways PT, 250 S. McCormick Street, Prescott
Do you watch “Dancing with the Stars” and think to yourself, “I could do that”? Or maybe you watch it and think, “there’s no way I could do that.” Well, either way, you’re a perfect candidate for ballroom dance lessons.
And guess what? If you join the growing group of Thursday night dancers, you’ll be “Dancing with the Gays.” That’s right, this group is all GLBT—gals dancing with gals and guys with guys. Who leads and who follows is up to you to decide! And you don’t even need to bring a dance partner. We’ll fix you up with just the right match for your skill level.
Here’s how it works: a one-hour group lesson is $55. That cost gets divided equally between the number of participants. The average group size is 8 to 10, so that puts the total cost around $6 or $7 per person per night. The Thursday group is almost full, so the lessons may even be expanded to another night if there’s enough interest. This is an RSVP-only type of event, since we have to be sure there are enough people to fill each class. If you’re dying to try it or you just want more information, please contact Tracy at (928) 830-7035. She’ll be happy to give you all the dates, times, and details.
Directions: Backway’s PT is located at 250 S. McCormick St in Prescott. To get there from Gurley St, go south on McCormick St 1½ blocks. After you pass the intersection of McCormick and Goodwin Street, enter the fifth driveway on the right and look for the two-story yellow building. Parking is available on the upper or lower level.
Tues, May 13th & 27th / June 10th & 24th • 3 to 5 pm
Prescott Pride Center, 111 Josephine Street, Prescott
Talk Time, a discussion group for single women over 40, continues to be a great way to get to know other women in the community. It’s an open forum that gives women a chance to explore a variety of topics in greater depth. If you’d like to participate, just bring your favorite non-alcoholic beverage and join the conversation. There’s no charge for attending, but the Pride Center welcomes donations to help defray facility costs. The group is primarily for singles, but couples are always welcome.
For more information, please contact Carma at (928) 778-5898.
Saturdays, May 17th / June 28th • 6 to 10 pm
Prescott Pride Center, 111 Josephine Street, Prescott
What kid doesn’t love Cinco de Mayo? It’s colorful, joyous, and full of fun! And whose child doesn’t love a musical instrument that makes non-stop noise? In May, we’re combining these two great concepts into one for Parents’ Night Out. Your kids will have a chance to make personalized maracas so they can dance the night away to their own Latin beat. In June, it’s homemade pizza night. The kids get to create their own pizzas and share their culinary creations with each other. Both events are guaranteed fun for your children and a little respite for you, so drop the kids off and enjoy your own night on the town!
Chris McCarty, Pride Center volunteer and mother of 10-year-old Kylin, and Lisa Kirkendoll will be the hosts for the night. They’ll provide snacks and beverages, but be sure your children have had dinner before you drop them off in May. In June, homemade pizza is on the menu, so dinner is included. There’s no official fee for this event. All we ask is a $3 donation per child (more if you can, less if you can’t) to cover the cost of supplies. For more information. please contact Chris at (602) 472-1290.
Sundays, May 18th / June 8th • 11:30 am
Waffles ‘N More, 1365 W. Iron Springs Road, Prescott
To avoid the Mother’s Day madness, we’re moving the May community breakfast to the third Sunday of the month. In June, we’ll be back to our second Sunday of the month schedule. For any new folks who are thinking about attending, it’s a casual event that’s pretty effortless. Just RSVP by the deadline, show up, order breakfast, and mingle with the gang. Everyone gets a separate check and newcomers are always greeted warmly and introduced around.
If you’d like to join us for the May breakfast, please RSVP to Frankie at (928) 443-8520 by Friday, May 16th. For the June breakfast, RSVP by Friday, June 6th.
By the way… don’t forget to stay in town for the Pride Center’s estate planning presentation after breakfast on May 18th. All the details start on the front page.
Thursdays, May 15th / June 19th • 7 pm (New Summer Hours)
Prescott Pride Center, 111 Josephine Street, Prescott
Coffee Night is a great way to kick back and enjoy some casual social time with your GLBT pals. The long summer evenings will make it especially nice to sit outside for the next couple of months, so we’re switching back to our summer start time of 7 pm. If that’s too late for a double espresso, you can always have a decaf or an herbal tea. So come on out and join us for a night of light conversation and lots of laughs. Some fresh air and family fun will do wonders for your disposition!
For more info, give Robert a call at (928) 776-8526 or (928) 830-4683.
Thursdays, May 22nd / June 26th • 6 pm
May 22nd : Canton Dragon, 337 N. Montezuma St, Prescott
June 26th : Porky’s, 330 W. Gurley St, Prescott
Somehow we’ve managed to have DiningOUT events for years without ever going out for Chinese food. Why didn’t you say something? Well, we finally figured it out for ourselves and Canton Dragon is on the list for May. They have all the Chinese classics from sweet and sour pork to General Tso’s chicken.
In preparation for the 4th of July, we’ll be heading down to Porky’s for a summer picnic. We plan to eat at the restaurant, but we can always play it by ear and take our food to the courthouse square for a real picnic. Porky’s serves classic barbeque favorites like pulled pork sandwiches and baby back ribs, plus all the traditional fixins’.
If you’d like to join us for DiningOUT in May, please RSVP to Frankie at (928) 443-8520 by Tuesday, May 20th. For June, be sure to call by Tuesday, June 24th.
On Summer Break Until September
Roger, one of the movie night hosts, will be out of town tending to family business for the next several months. Men’s Movie Night will be suspended while he’s away, but it’ll pick back up when Roger returns in September. If you’d like to be added to the list for email announcements about future movie nights, you can still send an email to Roger at nebrman03@yahoo.com with “Movie” in the subject line. For more info, feel free to contact Rex at (928) 759-7302.
The Prescott Gender & Sexuality Alliance (GSA) is a group for GLBTQ college students. Their purpose is to bring together the local colleges in collaboration and to create a safe place for GLBTQ students. For GSA information, please contact Frankie at (928) 443-8520.
Looking down the road a bit, we now have listings of some events planned for the next few months. (Note: Some of these plans may be pretty tentative at this point, and details are subject to change as dates approach. Changes will be made and events will be added as we become aware of them.)
