SPECIAL NOTICES

Changes Coming in 2012

Changes Coming in 2012 At the end of 2011, the Prescott Pride Center leadership team initiated some important discussions about the future of our community center. We explored opportunities for growth and development for the Center and we looked at the significant challenges we face as a small non-profit organization in a fairly bleak economic environment. As we continue to evaluate the Pride Center’s future, we will undoubtedly face tough decisions and have to make difficult changes that are necessary for our long-term sustainability. The leadership team takes these decisions very seriously and will make every effort to do what’s best for the local GLBT community, keeping in mind that the Pride Center is also a business that must generate enough revenue to cover operations and staffing. Please watch upcoming newsletters for details on our plans to move to a more sustainable framework. Before we launch into 2012, we also want to take a moment look back and thank everyone who has faithfully supported the Pride Center over the years. Your contributions have allowed us to touch many lives and connect our community in ways that were simply unimaginable when we first opened our doors more than a decade ago. No matter what changes lie ahead, you all can have the satisfaction of knowing that you made a positive difference in your own backyard. Thank you for your ongoing support!

Last Call for Staffers

For many months we’ve been asking for volunteers to staff open hours at the Pride Center on Thursdays and Saturdays. Unfortunately, the response to our ongoing requests has been pretty dismal. So this is our last call for volunteers before we are forced to make some decisions about closures. If you have a few hours that you could spare on a Thursday or Saturday afternoon, please consider signing up as a staffer. We’re looking for personable people with polite phone skills and the ability to be a good host for Pride Center visitors. Reliability is also important since you’ll be responsible for keeping the Pride Center open during visiting hours. If you have these attributes and you’d like to give something back to the community, please call Laurie at (928) 776-8997 between 9 am to 5 pm to sign up. The training is simple and short and you’ll work with an experienced staffer until you feel ready to go it alone. Please call today and help us keep the Pride Center open!

Kick the Habit in 2012!

Ready to kick the smoking habit? If you’re considering quitting or are ready to quit right now, then let the Pride Center help you. We can sign you up to receive free over-the-counter medications (patches, gum, or lozenges) delivered directly to your door, and we can hook you up with a quit coach if you’re interested. If you’re on Arizona Access, you could also qualify for 12 weeks of free prescription medication, such as Chantix or Zyban. If you’d like to receive these free resources, please contact Frankie at (928) 420-2171 or by email, or call the Arizona Smokers’ Helpline at 1 (800) 556-6222. If you call the helpline, be sure to tell them you were referred by the Prescott Pride Center and provide our location number (7051). That way they’ll know they’re dealing with a member of the GLBT community. Go ahead, call now and start kicking some butts!

Free Incentives! Do you live in an apartment, condo, or other multi-unit housing complex? If so, we want to know where you live. Why? As part of our tobacco prevention program, we’ve been asked to look at smoking policies in multi-unit housing where members of the GLBT community live. Please help us identify which apartments, condos, or other multi-unit housing complexes we need to evaluate. All you have to do is call Frankie at (928) 420-2171 and provide the name and address of the complex where you live. If you happen to know what the smoking policies for the complex are, you can leave that info in your message, too. We really need your help with this, so please call today. Anyone who calls and leaves their contact information will receive a free incentive (valued at $25 or more) just for participating!

Please see The Pride Connection (PDF) for more resources to help you kick the habit, and for more ways you can help us help you to do it.

Okay all you resolution-makers, January is here and it’s time to make good on all those health and fitness promises. You know you can’t get in shape by doing the 50-yard stare at your cobweb-covered treadmill, right? You’ve gotta get up and get moving! To join our local GLBT hiking group, just contact Patty Delp at (928) 899-6077 or by email to be added to the hike notification list. It’s fun, it’s free, and the group support may be just what you need to make that resolution stick this time around! If you plan to participate in a hike, please be sure you have the stamina and physical conditioning for the degree of difficulty that’s listed in the hike description. Most hikes are coordinated by avid hikers, so keep that in mind when you evaluate your readiness for the trip. By the way, the italic “fine print” below. Your participation in a hike or walk indicates your acceptance of those terms and conditions!

If you’re thinking about joining the Hiking Club, read on! Hiking, while generally beneficial for one’s health, is an outdoor activity with potential risks that may result in physical injury or other unintended consequences. Participation in the Hiking Club is always at your own risk. We encourage you to get clearance from your health care provider before engaging in any physical activity and we recommend that you warm up and stretch thoroughly before taking part in any hike, regardless of degree of difficulty. It is also your responsibility to pack appropriate gear for each hike, including adequate food, water, first aid supplies, and survival equipment. The Prescott Pride Center will assume no liability or financial responsibility for any accidents or injuries that may occur on Hiking Club outings. Your attendance at a hike indicates your full acceptance of these terms and conditions.
