Emmauel Lutheran Church, 7763 E. Long Look Drive, Prescott Valley
A few months ago, PFLAG began hosting a discussion segment as part of its peer support meetings. We’ve talked about the inclusion of gays and lesbians in the 2010 census, the anti-gay adoption bill in the Arizona legislature, and the impact of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. All of these discussions have been interesting and enlightening for PFLAG members and guests alike. PFLAG meetings are open to the entire community, so we hope you’ll join us for one of our upcoming discussions.
In July, we’ll watch a video of the GLBT Pride Month reception at the White House and talk about the social and political significance of that event. The topic for August is “Gender Identity,” which will be facilitated by Erica, a long-time community activist and transgender advocate. Erica (aka Frank, aka Sister Frankly Truself) is lucky enough to have a PFLAG Mom in Prescott and shares this invitation with the community: “I spend my workdays in Phoenix at the state health department working on HIV prevention. Outside of work, I’m a community activist in the GLBTQ world. My interest in gender identity has led to both academic knowledge and personal experience that I look forward to sharing with the group. Please join me for a broad discussion of such things as pronouns, public restrooms, “passing,” and what it’s like to be at more than one point on the gender continuum. Male? Female? Other? Let’s talk!” We hope you can drop in for this engaging discussion.
Peer support continues to be offered at each PFLAG meeting for anyone who needs it. All meetings are confidential and are facilitated by a member of the PFLAG steering committee.
If you’d like more information on the peer support process or are in need of one-on-one PFLAG support, please call the Pride Center at (928) 445-8800 or email us.
Friday, August 13th • 6 pm
Prescott Pride Center, 111 Josephine Street, Prescott
Since most folks already have plans for the 4th of July holiday, Girlz Grillin’ Night is taking a hiatus in July. But don’t worry, we’ll be back in action in a big way in August with barbecued ribs! Loni & Gina will be our hosts in August, preparing delectable pork ribs smothered in Gina’s awesome secret-recipe barbecue sauce. Marinated chicken breasts are also on the menu for those of you who don’t eat pig! Guests just need to bring an appetizer, side dish, or dessert.
The Pride Center will provide water and sodas, but it’s BYOB (non-alcoholic) for any other beverages you might like. A $5 suggested donation (more if you can, less if you can’t) is requested to support the ongoing work of the Prescott Pride Center.
RSVPs are an absolute must for this event to be sure there are enough ribs and chicken to go around. Please call Loni at (928) 499-0346 by Tuesday, August 10th if you plan to attend. Location and directions will be provided when you call.
Want to have a Boyz BBQ Night this summer? Well, give us a call and sign up to host! You can hold the event in your own home or you can hold it right at the Pride Center. Hosts provide the main dish for the barbecue, but guests bring all the side dishes and desserts. The Pride Center provides all the drinks, paper products, and publicity, so it’s definitely an easy way to have a party. If you’d like to host a men-only barbecue event, please call Frankie at (928) 443-8520 to coordinate the details.
Summertime and the hiking is easy! Well, at least it was until we strayed from the paved portion of the Peavine Trail! But it really was worth the extra challenge once we arrived at the Watson Lake dam for a cool lunch in the shade. Why not join us for the next summer outing? It’s fun and it can keep you fit! To find out more about the hiking group or to be added to the hike notification list, just contact Patty Delp at (928) 708-0361 or by email.
Special Note: If you plan to participate in a hike, please be sure you have the stamina and physical conditioning for the degree of difficulty that’s listed in the hike description. Most hikes are coordinated by avid hikers, so keep that in mind when you evaluate your readiness for the trip. We definitely want you to join us, but we certainly don’t want to have to carry you out! If walks are more your speed, please feel free to use the Hiking Club forum to coordinate your own easy jaunts. We want everyone to get out and get moving!
By the way, there’s always “fine print” for any sport or recreational event that is publicized through the Pride Center. If you’re thinking about joining the Hiking Club, read on! Hiking, while generally beneficial for one’s health, is an outdoor activity with potential risks that may result in physical injury or other unintended consequences. Participation in the Hiking Club is always at your own risk. We encourage you to get clearance from your health care provider before engaging in any physical activity and we recommend that you warm up and stretch thoroughly before taking part in any hike, regardless of degree of difficulty. It is also your responsibility to pack appropriate gear for each hike, including adequate food, water, first aid supplies, and survival equipment.
The Prescott Pride Center will assume no liability or financial responsibility for any accidents or injuries that may occur on Hiking Club outings. Your attendance at a hike indicates your full acceptance of these terms and conditions.
Sundays, July 11th & August 8th • 11:30 am
Waffles ‘N More, 1365 W. Iron Springs Road, Prescott
Sure, you can bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan, but why would you? It’s incredibly messy and those flying nuclear-hot grease droplets can be deadly! Why not let the professionals at Waffles ‘N More take all the risks? They get paid the big bucks so you can sit back and enjoy that crispy, crunchy bacon delight without any worries (or any pesky oil spots on your bathrobe). So why not join us for the monthly community breakfast? It’s fun, it’s easy, and you’re in no danger of third-degree burns!
If you plan to join us for the July breakfast, please RSVP to Frankie at (928) 443-8520 by Friday, July 9th. For the August breakfast, RSVP by Friday, August 6th. For any new folks who plan to attend, it’s a very casual event where first-timers are warmly welcomed and introduced around. All you have to do is RSVP by the deadline, show up, order breakfast (separate checks), and mingle with the gang.
We always pass a donation envelope during the meal for contributions to the Pride Center, but there’s absolutely no pressure to donate. Just give what you can or pass it on! If you have any questions about the Breakfast Club, please feel free to give us a call at (928) 445-8800. We look forward to seeing you there!
By the way… feel free to stick around after the July breakfast for the Pride Center’s board of directors and event-planning committee meetings. The meetings are held at the Pride Center and are open to everyone.

The Pride Center’s Spanish class is still on the move for the summer, so we’ll be meeting at different places every time (Mexican restaurants, the Pride Center, etc). To join us, just call Kevin Goss at (928) 445-5407 for the location of each class. Kevin will briefly discuss your skill level with you and then prepare a lesson that matches your abilities and interests. Basic, intermediate, and advanced students are welcome and you can join us any time. To find out more about Spanish classes, please call Kevin at (928) 445-5407.
Well, this summer has been too hot and way too busy for Softball Sundays to really get off the ground. There just hasn’t been enough sustained interest or commitment, so we’re shutting it down for the season. If you’d like to see softball make a comeback in the fall or next spring, please call us and let us know. Otherwise, we’re probably going to call it quits for softball.
If anyone out there wants to coordinate any other type of sporting event through the Pride Center, just give us a call at (928) 445-8800 and we’ll help you publicize it.
Tuesdays, July 6th & 20th and Aug. 3rd, 17th, & 31st
Call for Location
The Talk Time Gals have been on the road and if you haven’t been attending, you’ve been missing out! We’ve had a couple of potlucks at some of the gals’ homes, we’ve played miniature golf with dinner afterwards, and we’ve been to the horse races at Yavapai Downs. It’s been great fun and we’ve met new lesbians in the process. Our group is growing and we would like to keep growing, so come on out and join us. These next two months are filling up fast with plenty to do and see!
Meeting times will vary along with the locations, so contact Shirley at (928) 776-4580 to find out where and when the group will meet (if no answer, please leave a message). For those of you who don’t know, Talk Time is a private women’s discussion group for lesbians 50 and over. The meetings are an open forum format and singles and couples are welcome.
